Volunteer Positions
We offer three types of volunteer positions: (1) group leaders,
(2) computer coaches, and (3) office assistants.
Group Leaders
Duties:
- Under the supervision of a certified Speech-Language Pathologist, you will plan and lead hour-long sessions for groups of 4-6 individuals who have aphasia.
- Group types may include current events, writing, reading, brain games, art, music, and others. (Volunteers are encouraged to suggest new group types if they have a particular interest or talent.)
- Group types are determined at the beginning of the semester and depend on the interests of group members and volunteers.
- You will encourage individual participation in new and challenging communication opportunities in consultation with the Speech-Language Pathologist.
- You will regularly review group and individual successes and challenges with the Speech-Language Pathologist.
Computer Coaches
Duties:
- Under the direction of a certified Speech-Language Pathologist, you will work one-on-one on computer-based activities with individuals who have aphasia.
- Activities are determined by the interests and goals of the program member and may range from use of specialized aphasia software to work on communication skills (speaking, writing, reading) or more general computer skills, such as sending emails or developing slideshows.
- Weekly assignments are initially developed by the Speech-Language Pathologist and implemented by the volunteer computer coach. As coaches become confident with the weekly activities, they are encouraged to gain independence in developing weekly assignments.
- You will encourage individual participation in new and challenging communication activities in consultation with the Speech-Language Pathologist.
- You will regularly review individual successes and challenges with the Speech-Language Pathologist.
Office Assistants
Duties: Based on your interests and availability, you will
- assist in the development of innovative materials
- research new technological advances, such as new iPad apps
- prepare rooms for daily group sessions, greet and interact with members
- develop and update databases
- assist with office maintenance - make copies, file papers, organize supplies
- assist with special events
